The duo went to the slums of Rio de Janeiro, where they enlisted the cultural group Olodum to participate in the filming of the video, which was controversial in Brazil for the possibility that it would hurt Rios image. Lee and MJ ended up collaborating on a second music video for They Dont Care About Us, which is set in a prison but is also more of a montage-type spot, involving footage of global injustices. Although very different in tone and style, both videos are equally what you would expect from Lee, who is known for creating awareness of issues affecting marginalized peoples. He and MJ were a perfect fit. (the “Prison version” was banned on most music stations due to its violent scenes). The music was changed slightly to fit Olodum’s style of drumming.
